Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering

Environmental Engineering Overview

Academic Programs

The environmental program offers a wide range of discipline areas within environmental engineering at both the undergraduate and graduate level. The undergraduate program allows the student to emphasize curriculum while the graduate program offers a MS in environmental engineering and a Ph.D. in civil engineering.

Our program is also an active participant in the cross-disciplinary Center for Environmental, Sediment and Aquatic Research.
CESAR fosters interdisciplinary collaboration in teaching and research related to solving today’s environmental problems. Co-located research equipment and laboratory space is made available to participating students and faculty.

Research

The philosophy of environmental engineering graduate education at WSU is to provide a solid basis in fundamental concepts and theory complemented by engineering design. Such a background provides a basis not only for understanding today's complex environmental phenomena, but also future problems. In carrying out these goals, the Environmental Engineering Program provides three tracks: general environmental engineering, air quality engineering, and/or hazardous waste engineering.

Specific areas of research emphasis within the Environmental Engineering Program include:

Environmental Engineering is a unique discipline within civil engineering. With an emphasis in environmental engineering, you will have the opportunity to study industrial and municipal water and wastewater treatment, hazardous waste handling control and treatment, air pollution contol and treatment, groundwater contaminant fate and transportl, and the impact of pollutants on the environment. Knowledge in these areas will allow you to work in a challenging and highly satisfying field of study.
