Certified students in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering are required to fulfill the Experiential Requirement before graduation. This requirement is designed to give students experience that they will not receive in the classroom, and to better prepare them for a successful career after graduation. There are various ways to complete this requirement, and students are encouraged to choose an experience of interest to them.

Experiential Requirement Process

1. Choose one of the following options:

1. An internship of at least eight weeks duration (plus at least one credit of CE 495).
2. A research position of at least eight weeks duration (plus at least one credit of CE 499). This must be completed under the supervision of a departmental faculty member or approved mentor.
3. Complete a leadership or service experience of at least one semester (plus at least one credit of CE 499). Acceptability of experience is subject to departmental approval. Be creative! Examples include, but are not limited to:
   • active participation in ASCE (such as the Steel Bridge or Concrete Canoe competitions); EWB; SWE; Environmental Engineering Club; any other recognized student group
   • RA
   • involvement with varsity/club sports
   • firefighting/Forest Service
4. A co-op experience of at least 14 weeks under the supervision of a departmental faculty member and permission PPEL, with registration in CE 488 over the duration of the experience and CE 489 the following semester.
5. Study abroad for six or more credit hours. Note: International students completing their degree in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering will meet this requirement through their study in the United States.
6. Participation in a recognized ROTC program. Note: US Veterans in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering will have met this requirement through their prior service in the armed forces.

2. Complete “Statement of Intent”.

1. Students completing an internship, research position, or leadership/service experience:
   Complete “Statement of Intent” prior to the semester of experience. Detailed instructions can be found in the Statement of Intent form (PDF).After “Statement of Intent” approval from the department, you will be given detailed instructions regarding which course to register for (one credit of either CE 495 or CE 499), and what is necessary for the final report. The final report will be submitted within four weeks of completion of the experience and will be 3-4 pages in length, plus appendices.
2. Students studying abroad, international students, students participating in ROTC, and Veterans:
   Complete “Statement of Intent” after certification into the department or study abroad experience. Detailed instructions can be found at the bottom of the Statement of Intent form (PDF).Note: It is not required that you register for CE 495 or CE 499. Your statement/report is meant to document and share your approved experience.
