Alumnus, Myron (Corky) Donald Calkins, graduated with honors from WSU in Civil Engineering in 1942. He became a registered Professional Engineer and was a member of Tau Beta Pi and Sigma Tau engineering honoraries. Myron worked for the US Geological Survey and served in the US Navy during World War II. Following the war, he began his career in Tacoma, WA as a Design Engineer progressing to the position of City Engineer. In 1964 he was appointed Director of Public Works for Kansas City, Missouri until his retirement in 1986. He served in numerous capacities within the American Public Works Association (APWA), including National President. Myron was honored for excellence and service by APWA, University of Missouri, Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, WSU and the American Society of Civil Engineers to name a few. His civil engineering accomplishments include bridge building projects, overseeing construction of the Kansas City International Airport (MCI), as well as writing professional publications. A small bridge in Kansas City was named after him. Not only was he a successful Professional Engineer, but he served his church, community, and many charitable organizations with his personal time and talents.

Alumnus Steve Shrope appointed to WA Board of Registration |
Fall 2010, Governor Gregoire appointed Steve Shrope, PE, SE to the Washington State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. Mr. Shrope lives in Spokane and has 35 years of consulting engineering experience in civil and structural engineering for primarily large governmental and industrial projects. He is a graduate of Washington State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering (70) and a Master’s Degree in Engineering (85). He holds professional engineering registration in Washington (civil/structural), Idaho (civil/structural), California (civil) and Arizona (structural). He is currently a senior project manager with Womer & Associates, Spokane. His initial committee assignments on the Board are: Exam/Qualifications Committee, the Structural Engineering Committee and the Land Surveying Committee.
