Facilities and Labs

Because of the strong emphasis upon laboratory and field studies, the department has well-equipped laboratory facilities within each area.

• Environmental engineering maintains a number of research laboratories equipped with new chromatography systems, atomic absorption spectrometers, pollutant analyzers, and associated computer data acquisition and analysis systems. The Laboratory for Atmospheric Research(LAR) also employs a variety of meteorological and turbulence sensors including an extensive system for conducting atmospheric tracer studies using sulfur hexafluoride and other halogenated tracers. Three water craft and a number of vehicles and monitoring trailers are routinely used for a variety of field study programs.
  (CESAR) administers a National Science Foundation, Integrative Graduate Education and Research Training Program (IGERT) that affords unique research opportunities for Ph.D. candidates interested in spending time at national and international laboratories and participating in multidisciplinary teams. CMER fosters interdisciplinary collaboration in teaching and research related to solving today’s environmental problems. Co-located research equipment and laboratory space is made available to participating students and faculty.

• The Geotechnical & Transportation Engineering Laboratories include state-of-the-art testing equipment for soils and concretes. The Geotechnical Lab includes consolidometers, triaxial, direct shear and resonant column apparatuses. The Washington Center for Asphalt Technology (WCAT) includes facilities for the characterization of asphalt cements and concretes. In addition, a mobile drill rig is available for obtaining in-situ samples. Geotechnical and pavement researchers have access to the Washington State University High Resolution X-ray Computed Tomography Laboratory (WAX-CT) that provides a unique facility for the non-destructive three-dimensional visualization of microstructural features within the interior of opaque solids.

• Hydraulics Engineering is housed in the Albrook Hydraulic Laboratory which has a large work area for the construction of physical scale models along with a wide range of fluid pumping systems. Laster Doppler velocimeter systems are available for accurate velocity measurements. Computational hydraulics and fluid dynamics studies use a well-equipped workstation laboratory.

• In Structural Engineering, the Wood Materials & Engineering Laboratory (WMEL) houses a 40 ft by 80 ft strong floor equipped with computer controlled loading actuators and electronic data acquisition systems. Structural components up to 12 ft tall, 15 ft wide, and 75 ft long can be tested.

The department continues to update and improve the microcomputer laboratory now equipped with more than 20 microcomputers and an HP9000 network server. Workstation laboratories with five HP9000/730 workstations, several auxiliary x-terminals, a silicon Graphics workstation, and various peripherals are available for instruction and research. In addition, access plus free CPU time on the WSU mainframe IBM 3090 are available to all students, staff, and faculty. Excellent instrumentation shops and support staff are also available in the department and college.

The Owen Science and Engineering Library is located near the department. The library system at WSU maintains a completely computerized reference system for easy access to all library acquisitions from any terminal on campus. As repository to more than 3.5 million items, the WSU library system is an integral part of the educational resources at WSU.
