Named the Inaugural Coughlin Distinguished Professor in Structural Engineering |
Professor Dave Pollock has been named the inaugural Coughlin Distinguished Professor in Structural Engineering. The professorship was recently created by Jim and Diane Coughlin for the purpose of advancing excellence in structural engineering at Washington State University. The professorship will provide annual funding that will be used to support educational activities in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering undergraduate and MS-level programs in structural engineering.
Jim and Diane Coughlin have been long-time supporters of Washington State University. Jim graduated from WSU in 1979 with a BSCE. After working for several years with a number of structural firms, he and partners Steve Porter (WSU BSCE 1985) and Terry Lundeen started Coughlin Porter Lundeen, now among the top consulting firms in Washington, specializing in structural, seismic and civil engineering design. The success of the firm has allowed Jim and Diane the opportunity to give back to WSU. Jim cites the quality education he received at Washington State University as playing a key role in the success he has achieved in his career. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is very grateful to Jim and Diane for their investment in promoting excellence by our faculty and students.
Dr. Pollock joined the faculty in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in January of 1997. Prior to coming to WSU, he spent ten years working in various capacities as an engineer and became a licensed professional engineer. During this time, Dave led the development of the design provisions in the National Design Specification for Wood Construction and the Load and Resistance Factor Design Manual for Engineered Wood Construction and provided continuing education for practicing engineers, architects and building officials on the design and construction of wood structures. He is a co-author of a textbook in timber design that is used at more than 70 universities across the U.S. As current and former students will attest, Dr. Pollock is an outstanding teacher. He brings practical design experience into the classroom coupled with a genuine commitment to our students and helping them learn. Dr. Pollock is an asset to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and has significantly contributed to WSU’s reputation for excellence in teaching.
