WSU Engineers Without Borders Group Travels to Kenya Africa

Potable Water for 35,000 People becomes Senior Design Project

In May and June, 2007, two Civil and Environmental Engineering students, one Mechanical and Materials Engineering student, and a Civil and Environmental Engineering faculty member traveled to Kayafungo, Kenya. The group conducted a preliminary survey of the community and region for the purpose of designing a pipeline to provide potable water for 35,000 people.

The project was the student’s senior design project in CE 465 and ME 416 during the fall term of 2007. The design will be reviewed by professional engineers and the Kenyan Coast Water Services Board for technical acceptability during the spring term of 2008. Finally, the students will return to Kenya in May, 2008 to supervise construction of the pipeline.

This is one of the largest water projects to occur in Kenya over the past five years. It is being used by the Kenyan government as a model, which will insure community participation in the design and construction process, for the entire country. A short video clip that was edited by one of the students can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbX8Lt6zoEA
