Bridge Competition - Spring 2009

At the end of Fall and Spring semesters, structural students are given the opportunity to display their knowledge of what they have learned in class by constructing bridges to meet certain requirements. The bridges were judged on their ability to carry a 60 lb load and to meet the deflection requirement. The other part of the competition involved the aesthetics of the bridges. Members of the Civil and Environmental Department were allowed to vote on the most aesthetically pleasing bridge with there being a first and second place in each catetory.

Here are the results.

The first and second place finishers for the “aesthetics” competition were:

First place: Bridge #16
(“Chocolate bridge” with neckties)

Second place: Bridge #6
(Bowstring truss)

For the “performance” part of the competition were: (the lightest bridges that carried the 60 lb load and met the deflection requirement)

First place: Bridge #4
(Weight (mass) = 97.1 grams; deflection = 0.139 in.)

Second place: Bridge #6
(Weight (mass) = 142.3 grams; deflection = 0.044 in.)

Overall we had 25 bridges.
Three bridges failed to carry the 60 lb load.
The bridges ranged in weight (mass) from 97.1 grams to 1931.0 grams.
